Stick with it. ![]() You should be able to pull that cable, hold up both ends and instantly know if it is a crossover cable. Not only should you know when to use a crossover cable, you should learn to recognize one on sight. You will also need to know how to take a new piece of kit and interface it to that room full of 10-15 year old equipment. When they tell you something is down and production has been halted until you fix it you need to know how to work with old technology and recognize problems. Where you really prove your worth is when you go into a room full of gear that hasn't been touched in 10 years on a site where no one knows what anything in the room is or does. You will learn that in IT you don't always spend 100% of your time hooking up new shiney equipment that auto configures itself. Its been probably 15 years since I earned my CCNA and I am glad questions like that are still there. I have been in plenty of closets in the last 5 years that still had gear connected with cross over cables. The reason Cisco wants you to know these details is because they are still out there in service and someone with a CCNA might be hired to do a job where they could potentially run into them. Just as a side not to those of you saying this knowledge is useless or obsolete, you couldn't be more wrong. ![]()
